Chapter History
The Iota Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was established on the campus of the University of South Carolina on February 17, 1973, with seventeen charter members. From the time of its inception, Iota Chi has continuously strived for the high ideals of community service, academic excellence, and cultural enrichment, which are the primary principles upon which Delta Sigma Theta was founded.
In the past, members of Iota Chi have participated in a host of community service projects on campus and also in the Columbia Metropolitan community. The chapter also participates in several Greek unity activities throughout the year. Three of the university’s Homecoming Queens have been members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Members of the IX chapter are proven leaders, not only at the local level, but also on the Sorority’s regional and national level. Several members have held important leadership positions beyond the chapter, including Thyra White, an Iota Chi initiate, who held the National office of Second Vice President.
Since the charter line in 1973, twenty five other lines have been inducted into the IX chapter. These members have been seen around campus participating in both university and community related activities. The chapter also hosts a variety of events that address the needs of the community.
The chapter has been recognized by its peers and USC for all the hard work that has been accomplished by its members. Iota Chi has been awarded Sorority of the month by the Office of Greek Life, Spirit Award for homecoming week, community service award by student life, and has been named winner of several step shows including the 2009 Black History Month step show.
